Super Sub Dmytryk Fires Hops to Derby Win in Dramatic Queen City Showdown

Charlottetowne Hops FC claimed a richly deserved 2-1 victory over Mint Hill FC on Wednesday night in a Queen City derby that had everything — tension, controversy, chaos, and ultimately, a moment of individual brilliance that will live long in the memory of everyone inside OrthoCarolina Sportsplex.

THE MATCH

If the Hops needed any reminder that this derby carries genuine edge, they got it within three minutes. Diego Candia was shown a yellow card in the 3rd minute, with the visitors responding with a booking of their own just five minutes later — the tone for the evening set before most fans had found their seats.

Despite the febrile atmosphere, Charlottetowne controlled the opening exchanges in the manner that has become the defining characteristic of their 2026 campaign — deep in possession, probing, and creating. What they could not do was prevent the now-familiar against-the-run-of-play sucker punch. Mint Hill FC struck in the 34th minute with the Hops commanding the game around them, leaving the home side trailing at the interval despite deserving better.

It was a scoreline that felt as unjust as it was familiar.

THE CHAOS, THE RED CARD, AND THE TURNING POINT

The second half erupted almost immediately. What began as frantic pressure around the Mint Hill goal descended into a genuine flashpoint — a visiting player was dismissed for violent conduct, with further yellow cards brandished to a Mint Hill teammate and to Hops FC’s Logan Story and James Jenkin in the heated aftermath. The Mint Hill coaching staff also collected cautions during the second half as the temperature rose on and off the pitch.

With the visitors reduced to ten men, Charlottetowne began to assert themselves with increasing purpose. Two more yellow cards — one to each side — arrived in the 63rd minute as the Hops cranked up the pressure in search of an equalizer. The atmosphere inside OrthoCarolina Sportsplex was electric. The result still felt uncertain.

THE MOMENT: DMYTRYK OFF THE BENCH, TWICE IN FOUR MINUTES

What happened between the 77th and 81st minute will be talked about for a long time.

Kryryl Dmytryk entered the pitch at the 77th minute — and before the noise from his introduction had settled, he had levelled the score. The equalizer arrived within moments of him crossing the touchline, a finish that sent the Sportsplex into bedlam and rewarded everything the Hops had poured into the evening.

Then, just four minutes later, Dmytryk did it again.

Two goals in four minutes. Both after coming off the bench. A 1-0 deficit turned into a 2-1 lead in the blink of an eye. A yellow card to Dio Adamson in the 79th minute — sandwiched between the two goals — barely registered against the backdrop of what was unfolding. A final Mint Hill booking in the 86th minute came as the Hops continued to press for more, with several additional chances created and turned away before the final whistle confirmed the 2-1 victory.

It was one of the most dramatic passages of play in the club’s four-season history.

EXPERIENCE MEETS YOUTH — THE BALANCE THAT WINS MATCHES

The result also underlined the blend that makes this Hops squad genuinely compelling. Jordi Lluch — a former two-time All-Big South First Team defender and Academic All-American at Winthrop University, originally from Mataró, Spain — delivered a composed and commanding performance at the back before 17-year-old Brady Golden came on to see the result out.

Golden was joined in the night’s storyline by Noah Slack and Juan Herrera, both of whom made their NPSL debuts in the green of Charlottetowne. The gap between Lluch’s experience and the teenagers around him is not a liability — it is precisely the kind of balance that develops players and wins matches.

For head coach Morteza Ebrahimi, Wednesday was vindication. The performances across this season have consistently told a story that the early results did not always reflect. Against Mint Hill, everything aligned — the control, the resilience, and the clinical finish from a substitute who had barely touched the pitch. This is a team that knows how to play football. Now it is starting to collect the points that performances like these deserve.
